PhD students from Poland and the UE
The university is required to register for health insurance only those doctoral students who do not have any other grounds for insurance (e.g. employment, pension, insurance as a family member).
The registration takes place after the doctoral student submits a statement that they are not covered by insurance on any other basis. It is valid from the date of submission of the statement, but not earlier than from the start of education, and lasts until graduation from doctoral school or removal from the list of doctoral students.
Any change in the insurance situation (e.g. taking up employment, contract of mandate, obtaining a pension, loss of insurance as a family member after reaching the age of 26) requires an immediate re-submission of the declaration.
If a doctoral student is registered for insurance on grounds other than their status as a doctoral student, they automatically lose their right to health benefits as a doctoral student. The same applies to deregistration from insurance on other grounds.
The fact of being a doctoral student does not automatically entitle one to health benefits.
The university registers for insurance solely on the basis of a submitted declaration.
Registration for health insurance by the university does not affect the amount of the doctoral scholarship.
Doctoral students from outside the EU or EFTA
Doctoral students from outside the European Union or a member state of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) who are studying in Poland and are not entitled to health insurance on any other basis may take out voluntary insurance. To do so, without the involvement of the Doctoral School, the doctoral student should:
- Go to a National Health Fund (NFZ) office and submit an application for voluntary health insurance.
- You must have your identity document, a document confirming your residence status and a certificate from the university confirming your doctoral student status.
- Once your application has been approved, sign an insurance contract with the NFZ.
- Within 7 days of signing the agreement, take it to a Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) office and fill in the ZUS ZZA form.
The right to healthcare benefits for persons who have completed doctoral studies expires 4 months after graduation or removal from the list of doctoral students.
