Pursuant to Article 201 Paragraph 3 of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, the education provided at the International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice (IEDS) is based on an educational programme and an Individual Research Plan (IRP).
The Individual Research Plan is devised by the doctoral student in cooperation with his or her supervisor(s) and presented to the IEDS Council for approval not later than 12 months after beginning education at the Doctoral School.
The IRP must include, among others, the schedule for the preparation of the doctoral dissertation and the deadline for its submission. The deadline may be extended by the maximum of 2 years in accordance with the rules specified in § 15 of the Resolution of the Academic Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice passed on 27 November 2018 setting out the Rules of IEDS.
Half way through the overall period of education, the execution of the Individual Research Plan is subject to assessment [mid-term evaluation]. Should a doctoral student of IEDS wish to apply for a change in the subject matter of his or her doctoral dissertation and IRP, he or she must do so before the mid-evaluation.
