Admission to the International Environmental Doctoral School (IEDS) associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice is in accordance with Resolution No. 76 of the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice passed on 26 January 2021 concerning admission requirements and mode of recruitment.

• A candidate who applies for admission to IEDS in connection with a research topic from outside the list must apply to the admission committee in order to request permission to participate in the qualification procedure. The application must include written permission issued by the head of the unit, where the research project is expected to be carried out.

Requirements to enter qualification procedure
In order to enter the qualification procedure, each candidate must:

• create a personal account in www.irk.us.edu.pl and fill a form containing relevant declarations and consents;

• submitting through www.irk.us.edu.pl the following documents:

  • an authorized copy of master’s degree along with the supplement;
  • resume; PhD project title and outline;
  • a list of scientific achievements and documents confirming the list’s authenticity; other documents specified in qualification criteria set out for the given research topic (the documents may also be submitted in the IEDS office or sent to polarknow@us.edu.pl by post or via the website);

• pay the admission fee of 190,00 PLN.

Stages of qualification procedure
1. Knowledge test in the candidate’s discipline (max. 20 points);
2. Assessment of the PhD project outline (max. 30 points);
3. Assessment of documented scientific achievements (max. 20 points);
4. Qualification interview (max. 30 points).
Schedule
  • 1 July 2021 — opening of online registration for candidates through IRK (https://irk.us.edu.pl/)
  • 18 August 2021 — closing of online registration for candidates
  • 2 September 2021 – knowledge test in the candidate’s discipline
  • 14–16 September 2021 — qualification interviews with candidates
  • 30 September 2021 — deadline for the announcement of candidates admitted to IEDS

Admission to IEDS
  • The maximum number of admitted candidates is 15 (excluding those whose studies will be financed from external sources).
  • Results received by the candidates are used to compile a ranking list for each research topic. The ranking list determines the order in which the candidates are admitted to the Doctoral School.
  • IEDS admission committee specifies the minimum point limit for admission of candidates from ranking lists.
  • A doctoral student who does not hold a degree of doctor shall receive a doctoral scholarship in accordance with Article 209 of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science.

  • The admission committee includes representatives of all Partner units forming IEDS. All committee members hold the academic rank of a Professor or a post-doctoral degree (PhD with Habilitation).
